Tripura Aims to Strengthen AGMC, GBP Hospital as Top North East Medical Hub, says CM Manik Saha

The state is also advancing the adoption of artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and other digital technologies to enhance healthcare delivery.

Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital are steadily emerging as an important centre for medical education, research and super-speciality healthcare in the Northeast, said Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha during a recent event.

Addressing the event, CM Saha stated that the state government further aims to advance Tripura’s health sector by providing modern technology-based education, promoting research, developing skilled human resources, and expanding specialist medical services.

Dr Saha added that healthcare remains a key focus; the Central and State Governments, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are working together to develop health infrastructure, expand medical education, and ensure modern healthcare services.

The Chief Minister also highlighted welfare initiatives, including Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and state health schemes. He said more than 10 lakh children and adolescents have benefited from nutrition and healthcare services under the Mukhyamantri Sustha Shoisab Sustha Koishore Abhiyan.

A key highlight of the programme was the signing of an MoU between AGMC and Ramakrishna Mission, Viveknagar.

Under the agreement, the Mission’s ‘Niramay’ medical service unit will be recognised as an additional urban health training centre under AGMC and GBP Hospital, expanding community-based medical education and healthcare services.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to improving the quality of medical education in the state, the Chief Minister said, “At present, the total number of MBBS seats in government medical colleges has increased manifold. The gradual increase in seats at Agartala Government Medical College, expansion of seats in Dental College, growth of postgraduate medical education, and introduction of new specialised courses have opened new horizons in medical education for students of the state,” said Saha.

He also noted that advances in medical expertise and technology have enabled AGMC and GBP Hospital to perform increasingly complex procedures within the state, reducing the need for patients to travel outside Tripura for treatment.

According to the Chief Minister, nine kidney transplants have been successfully performed in the state, while efforts are underway to introduce liver and heart transplant services in the future.

Saha further said the government is strengthening healthcare infrastructure beyond Agartala through the development of trauma care centres, cardiac care units, and critical care facilities at district hospitals.

He added that the state is also encouraging the adoption of artificial intelligence, telemedicine, and other digital technologies to enhance healthcare delivery.

Along with this, the Chief Minister also said the process of establishing an independent health university in the state is progressing.

The programme was attended by officials from the Health Department, medical education institutions, and healthcare organisations, including representatives of AGMC, GBP Hospital, and Ramakrishna Mission Viveknagar.
