Inside India's Transition to Interoperable Hospital Systems

What it Takes for Hospitals to Become Fully ABDM-Compliant

What it Takes for Hospitals to Become Fully ABDM-Compliant

A patient's medical history is often scattered across different hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, clinics, and healthcare providers. Prescriptions may remain in paper files, diagnostic reports in separate systems, and previous treatment records inaccessible when a patient moves between facilities. This fragmentation can affect continuity of care, increase the need for repeated tests and make it difficult for doctors to access a patient's complete medical history.

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), launched in September 2021 by the Government of India, seeks to address this gap by developing an interoperable digital health ecosystem. Implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the mission aims to connect patients, healthcare professionals and health facilities through common digital infrastructure. Its key building blocks include the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), Health Facility Registry (HFR), Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR), and the Health Information Exchange and Consent Manager (HIE-CM), which facilitates the consent-based exchange of health records.
