Tamil Nadu to Build a 55-acre Biotech Industrial Park in Chengalpattu

The industrial park aims to serve as a fully integrated hub for biotechnology, offering facilities for pharmaceutical manufacturing, vaccine production, biologics, biosimilars, and other allied life sciences sectors.

Tamil Nadu is set to advance its biotechnology ambitions with the development of a Biotech Industrial Park in Chengalpattu, around 60 kilometers south of Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has issued a request for proposals to appoint a consultant for preparing a comprehensive master plan and detailed project report for the park, marking a significant step toward strengthening the state’s position in the life sciences sector.

The proposed park will be located in Alapakkam within Chengalpattu district and will cover 55.03 acres of land. Strategically positioned near major transport routes, including the Outer Ring Road, GST Road, and East Coast Road, the site offers easy connectivity to Chennai and other industrial hubs.

Officials say this location enhances the park’s logistical advantages, providing access to skilled labor, research institutions, and potential global markets.

The industrial park aims to serve as a fully integrated hub for biotechnology, offering facilities for pharmaceutical manufacturing, vaccine production, biologics, biosimilars, and other allied life sciences sectors.

It is expected to accommodate both large enterprises and startups, providing research and development infrastructure, pilot-scale facilities, and bio-incubation centers to foster innovation.

The park will also include contract development and manufacturing services to support the scaling of biotechnology products, making it a one-stop destination for industry players in South India.

TIDCO’s move to issue the RFP signals the state government’s intent to create a world-class facility that can attract investment, create jobs, and support entrepreneurship in the biotechnology sector.

The pre-bid meeting is scheduled for September 29, 2025, and the final submission date for proposals is October 23, 2025.

Officials have emphasized that the project will complement existing facilities such as the SIDCO Pharma Industrial Estate in Alathur, which already provides infrastructure for pharmaceutical manufacturing and allied industries.

Experts note that establishing a dedicated biotechnology hub in Chengalpattu aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader strategy to enhance its competitiveness in the global life sciences market.

The park is expected to catalyze economic growth in the region, drawing domestic and international companies to set up manufacturing and research operations.

It will also provide a platform for startups to access modern infrastructure, technical expertise, and collaborative opportunities, thereby fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

Once operational, the Chengalpattu Biotech Industrial Park is likely to become a critical center for pharmaceutical and biotechnology production in southern India.
