Odisha to Pilot ABDM in Keonjhar, Expand Digital Health Services Statewide

The initiative is designed to digitalise core healthcare processes such as appointment scheduling, bookings, referrals, and follow-up care through integrated digital platforms.

Odisha has moved to strengthen its healthcare delivery by piloting the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) in Keonjhar district, aiming to test and streamline appointments, referrals, and follow-ups.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has chaired a high-level meeting of the Health and Family Welfare Department and taken key decisions focused on upgrading healthcare infrastructure and making services more efficient and patient-centric.

As part of this push, the initiative is designed to digitalise core healthcare processes such as appointment scheduling, bookings, referrals, and follow-up care through integrated digital platforms.

Officials believe this will reduce patient waiting time and ensure better utilisation of healthcare infrastructure. Based on the outcomes of the Keonjhar pilot, the digital health system will be expanded across Odisha.

ABDM is a flagship national digital health initiative that aims to build a comprehensive digital ecosystem by linking patients, hospitals, and healthcare providers. Through the creation of Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts, citizens can securely store and access their digital health records, enabling continuity of care across facilities.

Nationally, the mission has already seen large-scale adoption, with millions of digital health accounts and records created, forming the backbone of India’s evolving digital health architecture.

By piloting ABDM, Odisha aims to build a more responsive, technology-driven, and inclusive healthcare framework that meets the evolving needs of its population while aligning with national digital health goals.

Alongside the digital health rollout, the Chief Minister has approved the introduction of Diplomate of National Board courses at district headquarters hospitals and reiterated the state’s focus on promoting traditional systems of medicine.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, these measures are intended to create a healthcare system that combines modern digital health solutions with strengthened medical training and the promotion of traditional medicine.
