With these investments, the state aims to achieve a 30% increase in hospital bed capacity and significantly enhance access to specialised healthcare.

The Odisha government has announced an investment of nearly INR 9,200 Cr to modernize the healthcare infrastructure of four major medical institutions.

The announcement followed a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and attended by Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling.

“The CM has also decided to develop SCB MCH in Cuttack as an AIIMS++ institution for which construction work is underway at an estimated cost of INR 4,474.49 Cr. The new facilities with an enhanced bed capacity of 3,796 will be ready by June 2026,” the CMO said in a statement.

Major Redevelopment Project

As part of the initiative, the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Burla will receive INR 1,594 Cr, expanding its bed capacity from 1,485 to 2,861.

Similarly, MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur is set for redevelopment with a budget of INR 1,014.13 Cr, increasing its beds from 1,583 to 2,033.

Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) will be allocated INR 627.16 Cr, enhancing its current bed strength from 437 to 763.

The largest share of funding of INR 5,958 Cr, will go toward a full-scale redevelopment of Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, raising its bed capacity from 750 to 2,582.

Meanwhile, the Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer is also undergoing redevelopment with an INR 895.89 Cr investment aimed at expanding its bed capacity to 1,127.

This development is aligned with the state government’s earlier announcement to set up new medical colleges in Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Dhenkanal, and Nabarangpur.

At present, Odisha has 12 operational medical colleges, with two more nearing inauguration. The state’s 2025-26 budget has allocated funding for the upcoming institutions under a national scheme with a 60:40 cost-sharing model between the Center and the state.

With these ongoing investments, the state aims to achieve a 30% increase in hospital bed capacity and significantly enhance access to specialised healthcare for its fast-growing population.
