Sir Ganga Ram Hosp Unveils New Medtech for Non-Surgical Tremor Treatment

This technology is emerging as a potential substitute for invasive deep-brain stimulation surgery.

A new medical technology offering a non-surgical alternative for treating debilitating tremors has been introduced by Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) in India.

Known as MRgFUS (MRI-Guided Focused Ultrasound) Thalamotomy, this advanced procedure allows doctors at SGRH to monitor treatment in real-time and fine-tune parameters to enhance safety and effectiveness.

This technology is emerging as a potential substitute for invasive deep-brain stimulation surgery.

One such case involved a retired schoolteacher who had endured severe hand tremors for years, impacting her ability to carry out daily activities such as drinking water, eating, or writing.

Once socially active, she withdrew from public life due to embarrassment over her condition. Despite seeking medical help from numerous specialists and trying various medications, her symptoms persisted.

Fearful of undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation, a surgical procedure involving the implantation of a brain pacemaker, she delayed treatment until learning about MRgFUS.

"The patient underwent MRgFUS Thalamotomy at SGRH and experienced immediate results. Her right hand became tremor-free during the procedure itself. The next morning, she joyfully drank water without spilling, ate a sandwich on her own, and wrote her name with a steady hand, big victories that marked a huge leap in reclaiming her life," said Dr Anshu Rohatgi, Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH).

MRgFUS works by using focused ultrasound waves, guided by MRI, to precisely target and treat the brain regions causing tremors. It is particularly beneficial for people with Essential Tremors and Tremor-Dominant Parkinson's Disease.

Sharing thoughts, Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of the Board of Management at SGRH, said, "SGRH has a tradition of providing cutting-edge technology for patients. In this series we bring, for the first time in North India, a non-invasive treatment for debilitating movement disorders. This treatment will be a boon for patients with no relief from conservative medical treatment. This is our contribution to constantly be the first in patient care."

Dr Satnam Chhabra, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at SGRH, added, "This highly precise procedure was performed by a team comprising of neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroradiologists. As this is completely non-invasive, all risks associated with open surgery are effectively avoided."
