ScionHealth has completed the transfer of eight community hospitals to Lifepoint Health, finalizing a transaction first announced in March as part of the company's strategy to focus on specialty hospital services.
The deal includes acute care hospitals located in Idaho, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
With the addition of the facilities, Brentwood, Tennessee-based Lifepoint Health has expanded its network to 68 community hospital campuses. The company also operates more than 70 rehabilitation and behavioral health hospitals and over 300 additional care sites across the United States.
The hospitals included in the transaction are Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, Mississippi; Ennis Regional Medical Center in Ennis, Texas; Livingston Regional Hospital in Livingston, Tennessee; Logan Regional Medical Center in Logan, West Virginia; Palestine Regional Medical Center in Palestine, Texas; Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia, Texas; St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho; and Watertown Regional Medical Center in Watertown, Wisconsin.
Both organizations stated that employees, healthcare providers, and existing services at the hospitals will remain in place following the transfer.
“Lifepoint is honored to welcome these eight hospitals, their employees and their communities to our diversified healthcare delivery system,” David Dill, chairman and CEO of Lifepoint Health, said in a statement. He added that the company plans to work with local teams to assess community healthcare needs and evaluate opportunities to expand services.
For Louisville, Kentucky-based ScionHealth, the transaction is part of a broader effort to strengthen its capital structure and concentrate on its core specialty hospital business. Following the transfer, the company operates six community hospitals and 63 specialty hospitals, primarily focused on long-term acute care services.
Lifepoint Health and ScionHealth share a common ownership structure under Apollo Global Management. ScionHealth was established in 2021 following the separation of certain hospital assets from Lifepoint and the integration of facilities acquired through Apollo-backed Kindred Healthcare.
The two health systems have previously exchanged assets as part of portfolio restructuring efforts. Their ownership model has also drawn attention from critics of private equity involvement in healthcare. Lifepoint Health was among the hospital operators examined during a 2023–2024 U.S. Senate Budget Committee investigation into the impact of private equity ownership on healthcare delivery.
