Wellstar Health System has finalized an agreement to acquire Mountain Lakes Medical Center (MLMC), a 25-bed critical access hospital serving Rabun County and surrounding communities in northeast Georgia. The transaction is expected to close on August 1, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

Following the acquisition, the hospital will operate as Wellstar Mountain Lakes Medical Center and become part of Wellstar’s integrated healthcare network across Georgia.

According to Wellstar President and CEO Ketul J. Patel, the acquisition is intended to expand access to coordinated healthcare services while building on the hospital’s existing role in the region.

“From our earliest conversations, it was clear that Mountain Lakes Medical Center was a special organization with a talented team, deep community roots and tremendous potential,” Patel said in a statement.

He added that the hospital would play a role in Wellstar’s broader effort to connect community hospitals, physicians, specialists, advanced clinical programs, and digital health capabilities across Georgia and the Southeast.

Mountain Lakes Medical Center CEO Kristy Hall said joining Wellstar would provide patients and clinicians with access to additional expertise, technology, specialty resources, and healthcare capabilities while maintaining the hospital’s local focus.

The organizations stated that patients will continue receiving care from their current clinicians and care teams during the transition. Wellstar said it plans to implement a phased integration process focused on maintaining continuity for patients, clinicians, and employees.

As part of the health system, Mountain Lakes Medical Center will gain access to Wellstar’s clinical programs, technology infrastructure, and operational resources. The hospital will also eventually be connected to Wellstar’s Digital Care Network, which links local providers with specialists and advanced care programs across the system in real time to support diagnosis, treatment planning, and coordinated care.

The acquisition is also expected to expand access to specialty services and advanced treatment options for residents across northeast Georgia while allowing patients to continue receiving care closer to home.

Wellstar said it intends to retain current Mountain Lakes Medical Center employees at the time of transition and expects local operations to continue without disruption throughout the integration process. Additional updates will be shared with employees, clinicians, patients, and community stakeholders as the transaction progresses.
