JSS Hospital Mysuru Conducts Advanced Shoulder Replacement with Virtual Implant Technology

The procedure is designed for patients facing severe shoulder dysfunctions, such as rotator-cuff insufficiency, chronic pain, or pseudo-paralysis that hinder everyday activities.

The orthopaedics team at JSS Hospital in Mysuru has performed a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) using Virtual Implant Positioning (VIP) technology powered by Arthex, marking a significant milestone in surgical care.

The procedure is designed for patients facing severe shoulder dysfunctions, such as rotator-cuff insufficiency, chronic pain, or pseudo-paralysis that hinder everyday activities.

The VIP technology-based surgical procedure was performed under the leadership of H. Basavanagowdappa, Vice-Chancellor of the JSS Academy of Higher Education, along with Dr Narayanappa, Dr C.P. Madhu, and Dr Siddalingamurthy (Head, Orthopaedics).

VIP technology enables surgeons to simulate implant placement virtually before the actual procedure, aiming for more accurate alignment, better joint mechanics, and improved post-operative mobility.

Further, the Arthrex Modular Glenoid System (AMGS), along with VIP, enables the creation of a patient-specific virtual shoulder model, allowing for customized surgical planning that minimizes complications, shortens recovery time, and promotes better functional outcomes with minimally invasive techniques.

Notably, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (Mumbai) was the first in India to introduce the Arthrex Modular Glenoid System with VIP technology for shoulder replacement surgery. The launch included a live demonstration of a reverse total shoulder replacement, marking the beginning of VIP-enabled orthopaedic innovation in the country.
