India Powers Fiji’s Medical Future with 100-Bed Super-Speciality Hospital & Affordable Drugs
The facility will provide advanced healthcare services to Fijian citizens and the wider Pacific community.
The government has announced a major healthcare partnership with Fiji, committing to build a 100-bed super-specialty hospital in Suva.
The partnership also includes access to affordable generic medicines under the Jan Aushadhi scheme.
The announcement came during the visit of Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to India, following his talks with PM Narendra Modi.
The Memorandum of Understanding for the hospital covers design, construction, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.
The Ministry of External Affairs said this is the largest project undertaken by India under its Grant-in-Aid programme in the Pacific region.
The facility will provide advanced healthcare services to Fijian citizens and the wider Pacific community.
PM Modi, in his statement, said, “Therefore, a 100-bed super specialty hospital will be built in Suva. Dialysis units and sea ambulances will also be sent. Jan Aushadhi Kendras will be opened to provide affordable, high-quality medicines to every home. To ensure that no one is held back in the race for their dreams, a ‘Jaipur Foot’ camp will also be organized in Fiji.”
Alongside the hospital project, an agreement was signed between HLL Lifecare Ltd. and Fiji’s Ministry of Health for the supply of medicines under the Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana. This agreement will lead to the establishment of Jan Aushadhi Kendras in Fiji, ensuring the availability of affordable generics.
Under the new healthcare package, up to ten Fijians will be treated annually in Indian hospitals under the “Heal in India” programme.
The initiative is designed to complement Fiji’s Overseas Medical Referral system and provide access to specialised treatments.
The government has also announced support measures to strengthen Fiji’s healthcare infrastructure. Dialysis units will be provided to address the growing burden of kidney-related diseases.
Two sea ambulances will also be sent to improve emergency medical transport across the country’s islands. A Jaipur Foot camp will be organised to offer free prosthetic limbs, improving mobility for differently-abled individuals.
