The proposed registry will collect data from hospitals and healthcare providers to monitor device performance and identify adverse events more efficiently.

The Indian government is planning to set up a national registry to monitor implantable medical devices, aiming to improve patient safety and strengthen regulatory oversight.

The initiative, led by the Centre, seeks to create a centralized system to track devices such as stents, pacemakers, and orthopedic implants across the country.

The proposed registry will collect data from hospitals and healthcare providers to monitor device performance and identify adverse events more efficiently.

This is expected to improve post-market surveillance, enable faster recalls if needed, and support better regulatory decision-making. It will also enhance traceability, allowing authorities to link devices to specific manufacturers and batches.

“India implants lakhs of devices every year but can’t trace them. A National Implant Registry will help find patients in a recall, track real-world safety, and build Indian evidence,” said Rajiv Nath, forum coordinator of the Association of Indian Medical Devices Industry.

According to officials, the registry will also help guide policy measures and improve procurement decisions, especially for government-run schemes. It is expected to create a clearer distinction between high-quality and low-cost devices while helping curb the entry of substandard imports from neighbouring countries.

The initiative is currently in the planning stage, with details on implementation timelines yet to be announced. Once operational, the registry is expected to play a key role in building a more transparent and data-driven MedTech ecosystem. India’s medical devices sector is projected to grow to $50 billion by 2030.
