It has also been built for integration with HMIS, e-prescription platforms, doctor-facing applications, and other ABDM-compliant digital health solutions.

The Union Health Ministry has launched the National Drug Registry under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), creating a centralized digital repository of standardized medicine information, enabling healthcare providers and digital platforms to access verified drug data through a single source.

Developed in collaboration with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the National Resource Centre for EHR Standards (NRCeS), Pune, the National Drug Registry has been designed as a unified platform for medicine-related information.

According to the ministry, it "serves as a single source of truth for medicines in India, enabling consistent identification, storage, exchange and usage of drug data across healthcare systems."

The National Drug Registry has adopted international standards, including SNOMED CT, to ensure semantic consistency and interoperability across digital health applications.

By using standardized drug terminology and coding systems, the registry enables different healthcare platforms to exchange medicine-related information accurately without variations in naming conventions or data formats.

Currently, the National Drug Registry includes more than 123,000 branded medicines, over 10,000 generic drugs, and nearly 29,000 drug substances.

Users can search the database using generic names, brand names, active substances, or manufacturers, making it easier for clinicians, pharmacists, digital health developers, and healthcare organizations to identify medicines using a standardized reference.

The National Drug Registry has also been built for integration with Hospital Management Information Systems (HMIS), e-prescription platforms, doctor-facing applications, and other ABDM-compliant digital health solutions.

Through open application programming interfaces (APIs), the registry enables seamless connectivity between healthcare providers, software platforms, and digital services, helping improve the quality and consistency of medicine-related data across the healthcare ecosystem.
