The initiative aims to strengthen pharma supply chains, including in APIs and KSMs, through promotion of bilateral investment and business linkages, technical collaboration, and industry-academia collaboration.

India and Japan have deepened bilateral cooperation in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, artificial intelligence and other sectors following high-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during her visit to India.

As part of a broader framework to enhance economic and technological ties, India and Japan have announced a $10 billion investment pact.

While the partnership spans multiple sectors, healthcare and health technology emerged as key areas of collaboration.

Sharing in a social media post, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described technology as the "strongest pillar" of India-Japan cooperation, as the two countries signed a series of agreements spanning artificial intelligence, technology innovations and healthcare during bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Commenting on the partnership, PM Modi said, “It is wonderful to meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Delhi. Japan is an important partner of India, and we are confident that our ties will get even stronger in the times to come. Our talks today covered the full range of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. The key issues discussed include technology, innovation, AI, defence and security, pharmaceuticals, and more.”

Highlighting the growing economic ties between both countries during a press meet, PM Modi said, “The India–Japan Investment Partnership continues to grow stronger. Over the past year, more than 100 new business agreements have been concluded, paving the way for over US$10 billion in Japanese investment in India. The agreement signed today between our financial services agencies will further facilitate the flow of capital and investments between our two countries.

“Our objective is clear-to attract 10 trillion yen in Japanese investment into India over the next ten years and to double the number of Japanese companies operating in India,” he added.

The long-term commitment aims to double the number of Japanese companies in India. Investors may look for potential business opportunities in the healthcare, defence, and technology sectors as these collaborations move from agreement to implementation.

A major outcome of the discussions was the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Sector. The agreement is expected to strengthen collaboration across pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical devices, biotechnology, and healthcare innovation.

The initiative aims to strengthen pharma supply chains, including in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and Key Starting Materials (KSMs), through promotion of bilateral investment and business linkages, technical collaboration, and industry-academia collaboration.

Underscoring its importance, PM Modi stated the partnership would help advance global health security by combining "India's scale with Japan's quality" to deliver affordable, reliable, and advanced healthcare solutions.

In addition, Artificial intelligence was another major area of discussion. Addressing a joint press briefing after the exchange of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), Modi stated both countries had agreed to strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence, expressing confidence that their combined technological strengths would contribute to global AI development.

Building on the India-Japan AI Initiative, both nations agreed to expand cooperation in AI research, development, and deployment.

The collaboration aims to deepen cooperation across the entire AI technology stack to advance the shared vision of safe, secure, trusted, inclusive, and human-centric AI.

The collaboration is expected to create opportunities for innovation in healthcare applications such as diagnostics, medical research, digital health platforms, and emerging health technologies.

The latest development follows the earlier visit of Japan’s Minister for Science and Technology Policy and Minister of State for Space Policy, Kimi Onoda, to India, during which both countries exchanged agreements related to medical research and emerging technologies
