India, Japan Expand Bilateral Agenda with Focus on Quantum Technology & Healthcare
The meeting was attended by Japan’s Minister for Science and Technology Policy and Minister of State for Space Policy, Kimi Onoda, and India’s Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh.
India and Japan reviewed ongoing collaboration in science, technology, and healthcare during a bilateral meeting held in New Delhi, where both countries exchanged agreements related to medical research and emerging technologies.
The meeting was attended by Japan’s Minister for Science and Technology Policy and Minister of State for Space Policy, Kimi Onoda, and India’s Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh.
Officials from both sides also discussed opportunities for joint research programmes, researcher exchange initiatives, and collaboration between academic and industrial institutions.
As part of the engagement, the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Department of Science and Technology, and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development exchanged a Memorandum of Cooperation focused on health and medical devices.
A separate Letter of Intent on quantum science and technology was also exchanged between India’s Department of Science and Technology and Japan’s Cabinet Office.
India’s Department of Science and Technology and Japan’s Cabinet Office also exchanged a Letter of Intent aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in quantum science and technology.
In a statement, Singh said, "India and Japan share a natural synergy in science and technology. While Japan brings advanced technological capabilities, India offers a vast pool of talented human resources."
Discussions related to healthcare research and medical technology centred on increasing collaborative efforts through shared research initiatives, skill development programmes, institutional partnerships, and coordinated funding mechanisms.
The Japanese minister further acknowledged India’s rapid economic growth and innovative ecosystem, particularly highlighting the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence across various sectors.
She also expressed confidence in deeper collaboration, emphasizing Japan’s strengths in advanced manufacturing and quantum technologies.
In a statement, Onoda said, "Japan's strengths in advanced manufacturing and computational technologies, including quantum and AI, align closely with India's expanding technology ecosystem."
"The agreements exchanged during the meeting, particularly in quantum technologies and health research, will promote deeper collaboration spanning research, application and industrial deployment," she added.
