The new 300-bed hospital will be constructed at an estimated cost of INR 99 Cr and will feature advanced diagnostic facilities, modern medical equipment, and specialised clinical services.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for a 300-bed divisional railway hospital in Howrah as part of an INR 820 crore development package for West Bengal.
The announcement was made during the Paschimbanga Divas celebrations in Tarakeswar, Hooghly, where the Prime Minister unveiled multiple development initiatives across sectors, including railways, agriculture, rural development, fisheries, and animal husbandry.
While the package spans several infrastructure projects, the proposed railway hospital represents one of its key healthcare investments.
The new 300-bed hospital will be constructed at an estimated cost of INR 99 Cr and will feature advanced diagnostic facilities, modern medical equipment, and specialised clinical services designed to improve healthcare delivery for railway beneficiaries and the wider community.
Besides the hospital project, the Prime Minister announced railway infrastructure upgrades, including the launch of new rail services between Nabadwip and Puri and the dedication of the Sankrail-Santragachi Link Line.
Indian Railways operates one of the country's largest employer-supported healthcare systems, with a nationwide network of hospitals and health units providing medical services to serving and retired railway staff.
The addition of a larger, modern hospital in Howrah is expected to strengthen this network by improving access to specialist care, reducing referrals, and supporting the growing healthcare needs of beneficiaries in eastern India.
The investment also aligns with broader efforts to modernise public healthcare infrastructure through technology-enabled diagnostics, improved hospital capacity, and upgraded clinical services.
