IHH Healthcare Increases Fortis Healthcare Stake, Eyes 2,000 New Beds by 2028

IHH Healthcare focuses both on brownfield expansions in hospitals nearing full occupancy and greenfield projects in metropolitan and tier-two cities.

IHH Healthcare has expanded its shareholding in Fortis Healthcare, aiming to accelerate its India growth strategy, aiming to add 2,000 hospital beds by 2028 and improve operating margins to around 25% in its local business.

Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, IHH Healthcare now holds 31.17% in Fortis Healthcare and 62.73% in Fortis Malar Hospitals, making it the largest shareholder in the publicly listed Indian hospital chain. Through Fortis Healthcare and its Gleneagles facilities, IHH Healthcare currently operates more than 5,000 beds across 35 hospitals in 11 Indian states.

“Our strategy is to progressively consolidate and increase our stake in Fortis as our platform for growth,” said Ashok Pandit, IHH’s Group Chief Corporate Officer. “Following the completion of the Fortis open offer, we expect margins to strengthen further, reaching market-average levels of around 25% for comparable assets,” he said.

IHH Healthcare plans to add 2,000 beds by 2028, focusing both on brownfield expansions in hospitals nearing full occupancy and greenfield projects in metropolitan and tier-two cities.

Among upcoming developments are a 200-bed hospital in Greater Noida and a 550-bed facility in Lucknow under an agreement with Ekana Sportz City.

Alongside physical expansion, Fortis Healthcare is strengthening its digital health capabilities. The group is working with Virtuleap to incorporate virtual reality into cognitive therapy programmes.

Gleneagles Hospital Chennai has partnered with Vellore Institute of Technology to advance AI-led neuroscience applications in areas such as epilepsy and neuro-oncology.

Fortis Memorial Research Institute is also piloting “FortisTR,” a wearable-integrated patient monitoring app designed to alert clinical teams in real time.
