Guwahati’s Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) in Panbazar is scheduled to become operational on November 16, with a planned capacity of around 850-900 beds.

The facility will temporarily accommodate departments from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to facilitate reconstruction work at the existing GMCH campus.

Sharing the development, Health Minister Ashok Singh said, “We are trying to shift GMCH operations there by November 15, and I want that by November 16, MMCH is operational. The GMCH departments will be shifted there for repair and reconstruction works. We cannot allow patients to feel any discomfort.”

He added that almost all GMCH departments would operate from MMCH during the reconstruction period, with only a few departments potentially excluded from the shift.

As per reports, the construction work on the hospital has been completed by infrastructure firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

The complex will also include residential accommodation for doctors within the premises.

The new facility is expected to expand Guwahati’s healthcare infrastructure and strengthen medical services in the city.

The latest development follows an announcement by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in July 2026 of an INR 1,000 crore investment for the redevelopment of MMCH.

The project was described as an upgrade to an 800-bed facility, with provisions for future expansion to accommodate up to 1,200 patients.
