Assam CM Unveils 430-bed Bongaigaon Medical College & Hospital to Strengthen Healthcare Network
The new medical college and hospital has been developed at an estimated cost of INR 611 crore on 151 bighas of land and is aimed at strengthening healthcare services and medical education in the region.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated the Bongaigaon Medical College and Hospital, along with a series of infrastructure projects in the district involving a total expenditure of around INR 711 crore.
The new medical college and hospital has been developed at an estimated cost of INR 611 crore on 151 bighas of land and is aimed at strengthening healthcare services and medical education in the region.
The institution includes a 430-bed hospital featuring an academic block, hostels, and other facilities.
With the new inauguration, the number of medical colleges and hospitals in the State has expanded to 17, including AIIMS Guwahati and ESIC Medical College.
The new facility aims to address the healthcare access gap for patients across the Bongaigaon, Baxirhat, and Chirang belt. Communities in this corridor, including a substantial tribal and tea-garden population, stand to benefit most from in-district clinical access.
The facility is intended to bring advanced tertiary-care and academic-hospital infrastructure to a district that has historically depended on referral centres in Guwahati, more than 200 km away, for specialised care.
Speaking at the event, the CM said, “Among all the projects inaugurated and opened today, Bongaigaon Medical College and Hospital is the most important.”
“As a result of the initiatives taken to expand medical education in Assam, the number of medical colleges in the state has now increased to 17. On average, two new medical colleges would become operational every year over the next five years, and the total number of medical colleges in Assam would reach 30 by 2032,” CM Sarma added.

The CM further noted that construction is ongoing for medical colleges in Charaideo, Biswanath Chariali, Golaghat, Morigaon, Tamulpur, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Sribhumi and Goalpara. Further in-principle decisions have been made for establishing medical colleges in Bajali, Hailakandi, Hojai and Majuli.
The initiative builds on Assam’s ongoing focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure, medical education, research, and workforce development while building an integrated healthcare ecosystem across the state.
The latest development follows the CM’s earlier announcement of the state's healthcare infrastructure initiatives, including the INR 4,382 crore redevelopment plan for Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and the ongoing INR 1,000 crore upgrade of Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital into an 800-bed facility.
