Assam Gov & Medanta Partner to Establish Robotic Surgery Centre at GMCH

Medanta will provide advisory support, including guidance on new technologies and evidence-based practices.

In a major step to expand advanced healthcare infrastructure, the Government of Assam has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Global Health Limited, Medanta, to establish a Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

The partnership aims to bring robotic-assisted procedures and advanced surgical technologies to one of Assam’s key government hospitals.

The initiative forms part of the state’s wider plans to strengthen specialised healthcare services and develop GMCH as a modern mega medical facility by expanding robotic-assisted surgical capabilities and technology-driven healthcare.

The development was shared by Ashok Singhal, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Assam.

Sharing the initiative in a social media post, Health Minister Ashok Singhal said, “Robotic surgery is no longer a distant possibility for Assam. It is now taking shape at GMCH. Today, the Government of Assam signed an MoU with Global Health Limited, Medanta, to establish a Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery at GMCH, marking a major leap in advanced surgical care.”

The initiative follows the healthcare vision of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and is being implemented under Health Minister Ashok Singhal.

As part of the collaboration, Medanta will provide advisory support, including guidance on new technologies and evidence-based practices.

The collaboration focuses on clinical expertise, knowledge sharing, training, and capacity building.

Additionally, a detailed implementation plan is scheduled to be finalized within thirty days as the first step of the project.

Further, it will also include joint monitoring and quality assurance aimed at positioning GMCH as a premier centre for robotic surgery, with advanced procedures expanding across multiple departments.

“Robotic procedures are expected to expand across multiple departments over the next 6 to 12 months,” Singhal added.

By enhancing access to advanced surgical procedures, the initiative aims to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state while enabling local medical teams to gain experience with newer technology.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Assam Government by Dr Siddharth Singh, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary, Medical Education and Research Department, while Global Health Limited (Medanta) was represented by DGM Marketing Biswajeet Deka, AGM Marketing Jayanta Kalita, and Northeast India Strategy representative Rohan Abraham.
