The state health department has also identified the hospital among centres proposed for an upgrade to Level-I status.

Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam has announced plans to add a state-of-the-art Trauma Block within its 500-bed Emergency Department.

The facility is expected to improve the assessment and treatment of accident victims and critically injured patients across the Barak Valley.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) shared the development through its social media channels, describing it as “a major boost to healthcare infrastructure in the Barak Valley”.

The proposed Trauma Block will form part of the hospital’s larger emergency care infrastructure, intended to expand access to timely medical intervention for patients requiring urgent treatment.

SMCH serves as a major referral centre for the Barak Valley and neighbouring areas, including Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.

As the region’s principal government tertiary-care hospital, it receives patients requiring specialised treatment for serious injuries and other medical emergencies. Strengthening its emergency facilities is expected to support the hospital’s role in managing critical cases.

The new Trauma Block is expected to streamline emergency workflows by supporting faster patient assessment and treatment.

SMCH has been designated a Level-II Trauma Centre in Assam. The planned facility is expected to strengthen its existing capacity to manage trauma cases and deliver critical care.

The state health department has also identified the hospital among centres proposed for an upgrade to Level-I status.

The Trauma Block will be housed within the hospital’s 500-bed Emergency Department, which forms part of a broader infrastructure expansion.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for the emergency wing in 2020, with the project estimated to cost INR 90 Cr.

The expansion was intended to increase the hospital’s overall bed capacity from approximately 1,350 to around 1,885.

Established at its permanent campus in Ghungoor in 1968, SMCH remains a key public healthcare institution for southern Assam.

The planned Trauma Block represents a further investment in emergency infrastructure, with the potential to improve access to specialised trauma services for patients across the Barak Valley.

The timeline for the Trauma Block’s completion and its operational launch has not been specified in the information released so far.
