Arunachal Pradesh Seeks Center’s Backing for Super Speciality Hospital
Wahge drew attention to the state’s border location and challenging terrain, noting that patients often need to travel long distances outside Arunachal Pradesh for specialised care.
Arunachal Pradesh has formally sought Union government support for the establishment of a super speciality hospital in the Itanagar Capital Region.
The proposal was placed by State Health Minister Biyuram Wahge during his meeting with Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda in New Delhi.
During the discussions, Wahge drew attention to the state’s border location and challenging terrain, noting that patients often need to travel long distances outside Arunachal Pradesh for specialised care.
He stressed that a dedicated super speciality hospital would help close these gaps while also serving neighbouring northeastern states.
The planned facility is being positioned as a referral hub, designed to ease dependence on distant centres and strengthen the wider regional health network.
Wahge also underlined the importance of linking the project with existing medical infrastructure, particularly the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun, the state’s only medical college and teaching hospital.
On his part, Nadda signaled support for the initiative. Local media reported that he backed plans to expand capacity at TRIHMS and the Civil Hospital in the capital region, though the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has not yet issued an official announcement.
The meeting also touched on preparations for the Northeast Regional Conference of Health Departments, which Arunachal Pradesh will host in October 2025.
The conference is expected to draw ministers, secretaries, and mission directors from across the Northeast, with Nadda confirming his participation.
This push for a super speciality hospital comes alongside other health investments in the state.
Earlier in May 2025, at the Rising Northeast Investors Summit, the Arunachal government signed a memorandum of understanding with private investors to set up a 250-bed multi-speciality hospital, marking a broader strategy to expand tertiary care capacity.
For now, the Center has not released an official press note on Wahge’s request.
