Andhra Gov Deploys Drones to Transform Last-Mile Healthcare in Tribal Regions

The program has already completed over 1,000 drone flights, covering more than 40,000 km and transporting upwards of 25,000 medical products.

The Andhra government has rolled out a drone-powered logistics network to deliver medicines, diagnostic samples, and essential medical supplies across hard-to-reach tribal regions in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district, improving the speed and reliability of healthcare delivery.

This initiative builds on the state’s broader push toward digital health integration and technology-led governance. Remote tribal belts in the ASR district have long faced challenges due to difficult terrain, poor road connectivity, and delayed access to medical facilities.

By leveraging drones, the government aims to bridge these gaps and ensure timely care, especially in emergencies and for routine diagnostics.

The project is being implemented by the state health department in collaboration with the Real Time Governance System (RTGS), the ASR district administration, and technology partner Redwing, supported by the US-based UPS Foundation.

Operational data indicates that the program has already completed over 1,000 drone flights, covering more than 40,000 km and transporting upwards of 25,000 medical products.

These include essential medicines, diagnostic samples, and emergency supplies that are often time-sensitive.

A key feature of the initiative is the integration of smaller government health centres with Paderu Medical College and Government General Hospital.

This linkage enables faster movement of diagnostic samples for testing and quicker dispatch of medicines back to peripheral facilities, reducing turnaround time for treatment.
