REC Limited Invests INR 11.55 Cr to Launch Sankara Eye Hospital with Advanced Medical Infrastructure
The funding has been used to establish comprehensive infrastructure within the hospital, including advanced ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical systems and fully equipped operating theatres.
REC Limited has inaugurated the Sankara Eye Hospital in Saharsa, Bihar, backed by an INR 11.55 crore CSR investment, to strengthen access to affordable and advanced eye care services for underserved populations in the region.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated the newly operational Sankara Eye Hospital in the presence of senior officials from REC Limited and other stakeholders. Developed under the initiative “Bringing Vision to Bihar,” the project reflects a growing emphasis on leveraging corporate social responsibility to strengthen last-mile healthcare delivery.
Over the next five years, the hospital is expected to deliver approximately 1.5 lakh outpatient consultations, enabling large-scale screening and diagnosis of eye conditions.
In parallel, it has set a target of conducting 40,000 cataract surgeries, focusing on timely intervention to reduce preventable vision loss.
A key aspect of the model is its commitment to inclusivity, with free and subsidized treatment pathways designed specifically for economically weaker sections.
REC Limited, recognized as a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Power, has increasingly expanded its CSR portfolio to include healthcare initiatives alongside its core financing role in the power sector.
The INR 11.55 Cr funding from REC Limited has been utilized to establish comprehensive infrastructure within the hospital. This includes advanced ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical systems, fully equipped operation theatres, and patient wards designed to support high-volume clinical workflows.
Additionally, the project incorporates mobile outreach units that will conduct screening camps in remote and underserved villages, extending care beyond the hospital’s physical footprint.
This blended approach of fixed-facility care combined with outreach is expected to improve early detection rates and reduce the delay between diagnosis and treatment.
