OpenEvidence & Penn Medicine Partner to Expand AI-based Clinical Decision Support for Global Health
The partnership will bring OpenEvidence’s AI-powered clinical decision support to Penn Medicine’s more than 10,000 clinicians across its seven-hospital health system
OpenEvidence and Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System, have partnered to deploy an AI-based Clinical Decision Support platform across the US Health System.
The partnership will bring OpenEvidence’s AI-powered clinical decision support to Penn Medicine’s more than 10,000 clinicians across its seven-hospital health system, with that support also extending to underserved communities through the Botswana-UPenn Partnership.
The deployment is intended to provide clinicians with personalised evidence-based clinical information by combining relevant medical literature with information available in patients’ electronic health records (EHRs).
The tools are designed to provide clinical evidence within existing workflows and support clinicians in areas including diagnosis, treatment options, and patient care.
Penn Medicine comprises the University of Pennsylvania Health System and the Perelman School of Medicine, counts more than 49,000 team members, and treats nearly half a million emergency patients annually across seven hospitals in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Commenting on the new partnership, Srinath Adusumalli, MD, MSHP, MBMI, Vice President and Chief Health Information Officer and a cardiologist at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, said, "A partnership like this gives our clinicians, here at home and elsewhere, the ability to instantly surface the best available medical evidence in the context of the patient in front of them.”
Additionally, the AI tool will integrate several Penn Medicine programs, such as the existing clinical decision support program Penn Pathways, electronic consultation programs, as well as brick-and-mortar and virtual care programs.
The deployment is intended to support access to specialised clinical information, particularly in settings where access to specialist expertise may be limited.
Beyond the U.S. health system deployment, the agreement enables Penn Medicine teams to design a tool from the ground up, built to support the particular considerations of practicing medicine in the region.
The chatbot is designed to deliver insights for diagnoses, treatment options, and overall patient care.
It also seeks to support administrative and educational tasks such as patient discharge notes and providing custom study tools for medical exams.
Speaking on new the development, OpenEvidence Chief Medical Officer Travis Zack said, "Working with academic partners like Penn Medicine, we're building and rigorously evaluating tools for the varied conditions under which most of the world actually practices medicine.”
In a recent development, OpenEvidence launched four medical AI models designed to support clinicians with different options for rapid clinical answers, deeper evidence reviews, and advanced medical research.
