NHA & Nepal Delegation Talks Highlight ABDM & Digital Health Adoption

The delegation from both sides exchanged views on implementation strategies, key learnings, and opportunities to adapt relevant digital health practices aligning with Nepal’s healthcare priorities.

The National Health Authority has recently hosted a delegation from Nepal, consisting of Bipin Kumar Acharya, Member of Parliament, Deepak Bohara, Member of Parliament, and Pradeep Acharya, Aide to the Chairman of RSP.

During the meeting, Dr Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO, NHA, Jyoti Yadav, IAS, Joint Secretary, NHA, and Vikram Pagaria, Director, NHA, briefed the delegation on Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.

The meeting highlighted India’s experience in expanding health assurance, enabling cashless access to secondary and tertiary care, and building an interoperable digital health ecosystem to support citizen-centric care at scale.

In addition, the NHA officials also share insights on strengthening healthcare delivery through robust IT systems across the country

The meeting was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Ministry of External Affairs, HLL Lifecare Limited, and the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India.

In a parallel development, Dr Sunil Kumar Barnwal also chaired a meeting with representatives from Indian hospitals to discuss pathways for onboarding healthcare institutions onto the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) ecosystem and explore opportunities for collaboration to accelerate digital health adoption.

The meeting also included discussions on encouraging philanthropic hospitals that are not yet part of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).

NHA urged to consider empanelment under the scheme to expand access to quality, cashless healthcare services for beneficiaries.

In addition, NHA also outlined key building blocks of ABDM, including ABHA, Health Facility Registry (HFR), Healthcare Professional Registry(HPR), consent-based health information exchange, ScanandShare, and ScanandPay models.

Further, the discussion also highlighted the potential of these initiatives to improve patient experience, strengthen continuity of care, enhance operational efficiency, and support connected healthcare delivery.

Furthermore, NHA officials emphasized that philanthropic hospitals play an important role in expanding access to quality healthcare.

Their participation in the ABDM ecosystem and greater engagement with AB PM-JAY are further expected to strengthen India’s journey towards a more inclusive, digitally enabled, and patient-centric healthcare system.
