Maharashtra Set to Become Global Hub for MedTech, Digital Healthcare, Biotechnology, Says Minister Jaykumar Rawal

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, telemedicine, advanced diagnostic technologies, and digital health were transforming the healthcare sector.

Maharashtra is set to become a global hub for medical technology, digital healthcare, biotechnology, research, and advanced medical equipment manufacturing under the state’s Developed Maharashtra 2047 vision.

Addressing a recent event, Minister for Protocol, Foreign Direct Investment and Pravasi Maharashtrian Sampark Jaykumar Rawal said, "Maharashtra is committed to building a healthcare ecosystem that is technology-driven, accessible and future-ready.”

Rawal emphasised that healthcare is being positioned as one of the central pillars of that long-term development goal.

The Minister said, “Maharashtra, particularly Mumbai, has a strong ecosystem of world-class hospitals, medical colleges, research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and healthcare start-ups,” while adding that the government intends to leverage this ecosystem to establish the state as a leading destination for medical innovation.

Rawal noted that rapid advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, telemedicine, advanced diagnostics technologies, and digital health were transforming the healthcare sector.

He further emphasized that technological development must remain patient-centric, affordable, and accessible to the common citizen.

“By embracing innovation, digital transformation and stronger collaboration between government and industry, we can enhance the quality of care, expand access and position Maharashtra as a leading hub for healthcare innovation in India,” the Minister said.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Developed India’, Rawal stated that the state was advancing this agenda through the ‘Developed Maharashtra 2047’ mission under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

“The vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 must be underpinned by a resilient and inclusive healthcare system that puts patients at the centre,” the Minister added.

Highlighting the Maharashtra Industry, Investment and Services Policy 2025, Rawal stated that it seeks to make the healthcare and life sciences sectors important engines of economic growth.

The government intends to ensure that the benefits of this development extend beyond Mumbai to cities and regions including Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Kolhapur, Amravati and Gadchiroli.

He further called upon Indian and international companies, hospitals, research organisations, investors and technology innovators to take advantage of Maharashtra’s growing healthcare ecosystem and invest in research, innovation and advanced medical technologies in the state.

During the event, the healthcare leaders also emphasized that the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is expected to create new opportunities for Maharashtra’s healthcare sector by attracting global capital, technology and research partnerships.

They noted that the agreement could further support the state’s ambition to emerge as a global hub for medical technology, digital healthcare and biotechnology.

In a parallel development, the Maharashtra Cabinet has approved INR 4,250 crore under the PRAGATI project to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the state. Of the total allocation, INR 1,500 crore has been earmarked to add 1,600 beds across major districts in Maharashtra.
