The proposed facility is expected to combine digital-first operations with a new leadership model that places nurses at the centre of hospital administration and governance.

Bengaluru-based Narayana Health has announced plans to launch a new smart hospital in Banashankari, Bengaluru, aimed at transforming India’s Healthcare leadership.

Announced by Dr Devi Shetty, the Chairman and Founder of Narayana Health, the group's upcoming smart hospital in Banashankari, Bengaluru, will be managed operationally by nurses, to prepare them to become future hospital CEOs.

According to Dr Shetty, the Banashankari Hospital will be India’s first "truly smart, paperless" healthcare facility designed to improve patient experience while delivering affordable care.

The proposed facility is expected to combine digital paperless operations with a new leadership model that places nurses at the center of hospital administration and governance.

The initiative aims to fill a long-standing leadership gap in Indian healthcare, in which nurses who form the backbone of healthcare rarely move into hospital administration or CEO level positions.

With this facility, Narayana Health intends to build a direct pathway from bedside care to the boardroom.

The model is expected to reduce reliance on traditional administrative functions, with operational management being handled primarily by nursing professionals.

Sharing about the concept in a social media post, Dr Shetty said, “In this hospital, only those who actually touch the patient will work. There are no receptionists, no secretaries, no scribes, and no HR or finance department. You're going to take care of the patient, along with the doctors and technicians. But the entire operational management and governance of this hospital is handled exclusively by you.”

As part of the initiative, the hospital is looking to recruit 25 nurses who want to expand their careers beyond bedside care and develop management skills. Selected nurses will continue to receive their regular clinical salary while also earning additional monthly management incentives.

Further, the selected candidates will also be enrolled in an executive hospital administration programme at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, with the entire cost sponsored by Narayana Health.

By combining real-world operational responsibilities with formal management education, the initiative seeks to create a structured pathway for nurses to transition from clinical practice into healthcare leadership roles.

"We are not just hiring nurses for a new hospital. We are building the future leadership of global healthcare," Dr Shetty added.

The announcement comes as Narayana Health continues to pursue expansion both within India and internationally.

Earlier this year, the Bengaluru-based hospital chain announced to extend its hospital operations beyond India, targeting select Western markets, with the United Kingdom identified as its initial international hub.

The healthcare provider also announced an INR 30 Bn investment to support the domestic market expansion.

Founded in 2000 by cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Shetty, Narayana Health has become one of India’s leading hospital chains, offering accessible healthcare. Its network, currently spanning over 5,900 hospital beds in India, has consistently focused on cardiac care.

With the new facility, the hospital aims to introduce a new approach to hospital operations by combining smart healthcare infrastructure with nurse-led administrative management.
