Ministry of Health Accelerates AI Rollout Across National Healthcare Programmes
These centers are working in tandem with institutions such as the CDAC-Mohali, ICMR, MeitY, IISc, and the National Health Systems Resource Centre, with technical support from Wadhwani AI.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stepped up artificial intelligence deployment across the public health ecosystem, establishing AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and AIIMS Rishikesh as Centres of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence.
These centres are working in tandem with institutions such as the Central Tuberculosis Division, National Centre for Disease Control, CDAC-Mohali, ICMR, MeitY, IISc, and the National Health Systems Resource Centre, with technical support from Wadhwani AI for projects ranging from imaging-based detection to clinical decision support.
Flagship artificial intelligence tools have been introduced across various programmes. MadhuNetrAI, for the assessment of diabetic retinopathy, is one such tool allowing non-specialist health workers to carry out retinal screenings using AI analysis of fundus images.
The model has gone live in 38 centres across 11 states and has enabled a review of more than 14,000 images to support over 7,100 persons.
Moreover, artificial intelligence has been integrated into the national telemedicine platform, eSanjeevani, which has standardised data capture and differential diagnosis suggestions. It was integrated in April 2023 and has since supported over 282 million consultations, enhancing consistency across health facilities.
Furthermore, the 'Cough against TB,’ AI tool has screened more than 1.62 lakh people in community settings between March 2023 and November 2025 under the national TB elimination programme.
The AI model has enhanced case detection by 12-16 per cent in areas where it has been deployed compared with conventional methods, the ministry said.
According to the Ministry, all artificial intelligence applications conform to the existing national regulations, including MeitY's AI governance rules, ICMR's ethical guidelines for biomedical AI, the Information Technology Act, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, and the health ministry's information security standards.
