Maharashtra Gov Inks $1.2 Bn MoU with Cleveland Clinic for Navi Mumbai International MediCity

The project combines advanced healthcare delivery, medical research, artificial intelligence, genomics, medical education, and innovation in a single ecosystem.

In a major move to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical innovation, the government of Maharashtra has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cleveland Clinic, Brookfield Asset Management, and Arodhan Health City to develop the Navi Mumbai International MediCity (NMIMC).

The latest development was announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in a social media post.

Describing the moment as a historical milestone, CM Fadnavis said, “Extremely elated to share that Govt of Maharashtra signs MoU with the Cleveland Clinic, Brookfield Asset Management and Arodhan Health City to develop Navi Mumbai International MediCity (NMIMC)—a first-of-its-kind global healthcare, research and innovation ecosystem for India.”

The project is expected to attract a global investment of $1.2 billion and aims to generate approximately 10,000 jobs.

Spread across 250 acres in Navi Mumbai, the proposed Medicit will be designed as an integrated hub dedicated to patient care, medical education, research, and healthcare innovation.

Under the agreement, Cleveland Clinic, a leading healthcare institution headquartered in Ohio, United States, will serve as the anchor partner for the project.

Its participation is expected to support the country’s s growing medical tourism and enhance access to specialised healthcare services.

In addition, the project is intended to support the development of world-class healthcare capabilities while fostering collaboration among clinicians, researchers, academic institutions, and technology innovators.

As per the government, the Navi Mumbai International MediCity (NMIMC) initiative marks a first-of-its-kind integrated healthcare bringing together advanced healthcare delivery, medical research, artificial intelligence, genomics, medical education, and innovation under a single ecosystem.

Commenting on the partnership with Cleveland Clinic, CM Fadnavis said, “This is more than just a healthcare project. Together we shall create healing wonders. Spread over 250 acres, and with the Cleveland Clinic as our anchor partner, we are creating a platform that will combine world-class patient care, medical education, research, AI, genomics, and innovation at an unprecedented scale.”

CM Fadnavis further noted that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Heal in India’ vision, aimed at making India a global destination for healthcare, research, and medical innovation.

Further, the strategic location near the NMIA and the planned Third Mumbai is expected to improve international accessibility and support the project's ambition of attracting patients, researchers, and healthcare professionals from across the world.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by senior leadership from all partner organisations. Among those present were Cleveland Clinic Chief Executive Officer Dr Tomislav Mihaljevic, Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine Dr Sameer Kapadia, Cleveland Clinic President for Emerging Markets Dr Falcone, and Lakshmi Mittal, Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal and a member of the Cleveland Clinic's Board.
