KGMU Gets INR 1000 Cr Boost as CM Yogi Unveils Major Health Infra Projects in Lucknow
The CM also inaugurated a state-of-the-art cardiology wing, developed at INR 105 Cr, which adds 92 ICCU beds, doubling the capacity of Lari Cardiology from 84 to 176 beds.
In a major upgrade to Uttar Pradesh’s medical infrastructure, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has recently inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for seven healthcare projects worth INR 941 Cr at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow. With additional upcoming upgrades, the total investment on campus now exceeds INR 1000 Cr.
“These projects mark the beginning of a new era in our journey towards a ‘Healthy Uttar Pradesh, Strong India’,” said CM Yogi, while addressing the event.
He was joined by Deputy CM and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak, Medical Education Minister Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh, and KGMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand.
New 500-Bed Trauma-2 Center
CM Adityanath laid the foundation for the new seven-storey Trauma-2 Center, expected to be completed in two years. It will expand KGMU’s emergency capacity with 500 additional beds, nine operating theatres, and modern facilities, and a dedicated patient utility complex including waiting areas, kitchen, café, and parking for over 250 vehicles.
“The new Trauma-2 Centre will be a Category-1 level emergency facility for the state, equipped to treat patients with severe injuries from road accidents, natural disasters and industrial mishaps,” said Prof. K.K. Singh, KGMU spokesperson.
At present, patients at KGMU often receive trauma care on stretchers due to overcapacity. The existing trauma block with 350 beds serves over 400 emergency patients daily, many of whom travel from nearby districts.
Cardiology Wing Inaugurated
The CM also inaugurated a state-of-the-art cardiology wing, developed at INR 105 Cr, which adds 92 ICCU beds, doubling the capacity of Lari Cardiology from 84 to 176 beds. The facility includes:
2 Cath Labs
6 Three-D Echocardiography Machines
1 OCT Machine and 1 TMT Machine
96 Bedside Monitors with nursing stations
25 Temporary Pacing Pacemakers
120 Syringe Infusion Pumps
“Until now, most patients depended on SGPGI, Lohia Institute and Lari Cardiology, which often faced capacity constraints,” said Prof. Sonia Nityanand, KGMU Vice Chancellor.
Orthopedic Super Specialty Center
Uttar Pradesh’s first high-tech orthopedic super-specialty center, also inaugurated by the CM, has been built at a cost of INR 86 Cr. The seven-Storey center houses 340 beds, including:
220 orthopedic surgery beds
60 sports medicine beds
60 pediatric orthopedic beds
24 beds for the HDU (High Dependency Unit)
24 private rooms
The facility includes eight large operation theatres, two minor OTs, and eight OPD rooms.
“The centre offers a wide range of specialised services including orthoplasty, spine surgery, sports medicine, paediatric orthopaedics, radiology and pathology,” said Prof. Ashish Kumar, Head of Orthopaedics.
“The centre is poised to become a hub for advanced orthopaedic care,” added Dr Shantanu Vatsal, Medical Superintendent.
General Surgery Block with Robotic Facility
The foundation stone was laid for a new INR 378 Cr general surgery block, a seven-Storey building that will house:
12 modular operation theatres
12-bed ICU
Robotic surgery units
Integrated networking
Solar power systems
Medical gas pipeline
“It will be equipped with world-class infrastructure and robotic surgical capabilities,” said Prof. A.A. Sonkar, Head of General Surgery.
Admin Building, Diagnostic Lab, & Others
The CM also initiated three additional projects worth INR 99.10 Cr:
A five-storey diagnostic and admin block with radiology, X-ray, CT scan, pathology, and microbiology, all under one roof.
Reports will be sent to patients via SMS.
A 450-bed caregiver accommodation block with disaster management and central command setup.
A 14-room guest house expansion for visiting doctors and guest faculty.
“These three major projects will be completed at a cost of ₹99.10 crore. With this, KGMU is set to begin a new era in patient care and medical diagnostics,” said Prof. K.K. Singh.
Vision for Future Healthcare
CM Yogi also announced that the state will collaborate with IIT Kanpur to establish a Center of Excellence in Medical Technology, involving institutions like KGMU and SGPGI in R&D to make India self-reliant in healthtech.
“Whether it’s an individual or an institution, those who fail to evolve with time are left behind. But those who move forward become a source of inspiration,” said the Chief Minister.
He also highlighted the rollout of MBBS courses in 17 new medical colleges in 2024 alone, including 13 government institutions, calling it a “major transformation for the common man.”
Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak reiterated, “Consider patients as God. It is because of patients that doctors are here… hence give them respect and care.”
