India Aims for Self-Reliance in Medical Devices Sector: Anupriya Patel

Patel stated that while advanced medical devices are crucial for modern healthcare, their high costs and import dependence pose significant challenges.

In a recent address, Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilisers, has announced that India is focused on building a resilient and self-reliant medical devices sector.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the nation's heavy reliance on imported high-end medical equipment, prompting a shift towards indigenous manufacturing.

Patel stated that while advanced medical devices are crucial for modern healthcare, their high costs and import dependence pose significant challenges.

The minister highlighted the National Medical Devices Policy, which seeks to promote innovation-driven manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports. To support this initiative, the government is encouraging research and entrepreneurship in the medical technology sector, aiming to position India as a global manufacturing hub.

Additionally, the minister noted the establishment of medical device parks in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, which are expected to lower manufacturing costs, strengthen supply chains, and bolster domestic production.

“Strengthening of medical devices is our motto. These schemes are bringing a lot of changes in the industry. The sector has much greater heights to touch,” she said.

Emphasizing the importance of collaboration, Patel called for cooperation among the government, industry, and healthcare sectors to create a stronger healthcare ecosystem.

“India has intent, skill and entrepreneurial strength. We should work together with coordinated and collaborative efforts for a better, stronger and healthier India,” she said.
