The group plans to deepen its presence across South India through capacity additions at existing facilities in Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru, alongside entry into new markets, including Madurai and Coimbatore.

Leading healthcare giant, Kauvery Hospitals, has announced its plans to double its bed capacity from around 2,500 to 5,000 over the next three to four years.

According to Dr. Manivannan Selvaraj, Founder and Managing Director, Kauvery Group of Hospitals, the move is set to deepen its presence across South India through capacity additions at existing facilities in Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru, alongside entry into new markets, including Madurai and Coimbatore.

“This is the fastest growth phase for us now that we have built capabilities and have a strong team,” Selvaraj said.

The group's expansion strategy includes strengthening healthcare infrastructure beyond major metropolitan centres.

Further, it aims to provide tertiary and specialised healthcare services in tier-II cities, reducing the need for patients and their families to travel to larger cities for treatment.

Deep Dive

Founded in 1999 with a 30-bed hospital in Trichy, the multi-specialty hospital chain has an overall revenue of INR 2,600 crore and employs nearly 18,000 people.

Currently, it operates a network of 12 hospitals across Trichy, Chennai, Salem, Hosur, Tirunelveli, and Bengaluru. It is also adding a large hospital in North Chennai.

The group acquired the listed entity KMC Speciality Hospital in 2009, which helped it secure private equity funding and eventually enter Chennai in 2012.

On funding its growth plans, Selvaraj underlined that they have built internal accruals and are not in a hurry to tap the public markets.

“We have spoken to bankers to understand the market conditions, but have not evaluated any specifics like pre-IPO rounds,” he said.

The group’s last fund-raise was around three years ago, and most of its hospitals have matured into cash-generating units, he added.

Kauvery further intends to address rising capital expenditure and operating costs across the hospital sector through operational efficiency.

“We are trying to manage this by improving operational efficiency,” Selvaraj said.

Headquartered in Chennai, the healthcare group plans to leverage digitally connected ICUs so that critical care physicians are able to monitor patients across locations.

“We spend around 3-3.5 per cent of our turnover on technology across ERPs, hospital management systems and cybersecurity,” Selvaraj stated.

On AI, Selvaraj sees near-term opportunities in back-end operations and clinical documentation.

“It is going to assist doctors, not replace doctors,” he said.

Recently, the indian healthcare major deployed the NetSfere Secure Communications Platform across its hospital network to strengthen clinical communication and protect sensitive patient information.
