Samaritan Health Services Completes Merger With MultiCare, Creating $7.5 Bn Health System
Effective November 1, 2026, the affiliation brings Samaritan's five hospitals in western Oregon under MultiCare's network and includes a 10-year investment commitment of $700 million to expand healthcare services, modernize facilities and strengthen workforce development.
Samaritan Health Services has officially completed its merger with MultiCare Health System, forming an 18-hospital nonprofit healthcare network with more than $7.5 billion in revenue. Effective November 1, 2026, the affiliation brings Samaritan's five hospitals in western Oregon under MultiCare's network and includes a 10-year investment commitment of $700 million to expand healthcare services, modernize facilities and strengthen workforce development.
The merger, announced in October 2025, gives Tacoma, Washington-based MultiCare its first acute-care hospital presence in Oregon, expanding its network beyond its existing operations in Washington, Idaho and Oregon.
Under the agreement, MultiCare will direct the $700 million investment toward Samaritan's facilities, clinical services, workforce development and technology infrastructure over the next decade. Planned investments include expanding inpatient capacity at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, modernizing hospital facilities, introducing new technologies, strengthening telehealth capabilities and expanding primary and specialty care access.
The organizations will also work to extend MultiCare's behavioral health services across Samaritan's service areas in the mid-Willamette Valley and central Oregon Coast.
Samaritan to Retain Local Leadership
Despite joining MultiCare, Samaritan Health Services will retain its name, local leadership and community-based governance structure. A locally led regional strategic planning process will guide investment priorities and longer-term decisions based on community healthcare needs.
"MultiCare brings expertise and resources that will help us meet the changing healthcare needs of our region and support our clinicians and employees in their work every day," said Marty Cahill, Samaritan's president and CEO, who has also assumed the roles of senior vice president and CEO of MultiCare's Oregon Coast to Cascades Region.
The merger received the necessary regulatory approvals before closing. In August 2026, the Oregon Health Authority approved the transaction subject to conditions, including MultiCare's $700 million investment commitment, reinvestment of Samaritan's operating margins into local communities and maintaining existing healthcare services.
A phased integration process began November 1, with both organizations stating that the transition would not disrupt patient services or health plan coverage.
Combined Network Expands Regional Presence
Before the merger, MultiCare operated 13 hospitals and employed more than 28,000 people across its healthcare network. Samaritan operates five community hospitals, more than 80 physician clinics and multiple health insurance plans, serving approximately 110,000 people.
The combined organization now operates 18 hospitals, with the investment commitment focused on expanding healthcare access and infrastructure across Samaritan's Oregon service areas.
