India strengthened its role in global health leadership during the 79th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA79), held in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 18 to 23, 2026.

The annual meeting, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), brought together health ministers and delegates from over 160 countries to discuss global health priorities under the theme “Reshaping Global Health: A Shared Responsibility.”

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda represented India at the high-level gathering, highlighting the country’s commitment to achieving “Health for All” and strengthening international cooperation.

During the session, discussions focused on key issues such as universal health coverage, mental health, disease prevention, and improving global response to public health emergencies.

On the sidelines of the assembly, Nadda met WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

During the meeting, the WHO chief appreciated India’s healthcare reforms and its leadership in global health partnerships. Both leaders discussed ways to further strengthen collaboration on shared priorities, including digital health, tuberculosis elimination, and equitable healthcare access.

Nadda also highlighted India’s major initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, expansion of primary healthcare through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and the use of technology and AI in public health systems.

He reiterated India’s role as the “pharmacy of the world” and its commitment to supporting global health equity.

The 79th World Health Assembly serves as the WHO's highest decision-making platform, where member states review policies, set priorities, and shape the future of global health systems. India’s active participation reflects its growing influence and continued commitment to building a more inclusive and resilient global healthcare framework.
