Adani Group Plans 2,000-Bed Hospital in Bengal, Half of Beds to Offer Free Care

The proposed 2,000-bed hospital builds on the Adani Group's earlier plans to invest at least INR 2,500 Cr in a healthcare project in New Town's Action Area II.

The Adani Group has announced plans to develop a 2,000-bed hospital in New Town, West Bengal, with half of its capacity dedicated to providing free treatment for economically disadvantaged patients.

The proposed project is expected to add significant tertiary care capacity to Bengal's healthcare infrastructure while combining subsidised and commercial healthcare services.

According to statements from the state government, Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ, had met with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari regarding the proposed hospital, following which written consent was provided for the project.

Speaking about the development, Adhikari said, "The Adani Group is planning to build a hospital in New Town. Karan Adani had met me, and I had given written consent for it."

Of the proposed 2,000 beds, 1,000 are expected to be reserved for free treatment for economically disadvantaged patients, while the remaining beds will operate on a commercial basis.

Adhikari said Gautam Adani had also sent a commitment letter indicating the group's intention to begin work on the project.

"Gautam Adani has sent his commitment letter expressing his will to start work for the hospital. This is a big achievement for West Bengal," the chief minister said.

Previous reports had indicated that the broader development could include a superspecialty hospital and medical education infrastructure, potentially strengthening access to advanced care in eastern India.

If implemented as announced, the project could become one of the largest private healthcare developments in Bengal.

The model of allocating 50% of hospital beds for free care could also create a distinctive approach to balancing social access with commercially funded healthcare services.
