The procedure was also reported as Goa’s first AI-assisted total knee replacement performed at a government hospital, positioning the achievement as a milestone in the state’s public healthcare system.

North Goa District Hospital (Asilo) in Mapusa has successfully performed an AI-assisted total knee replacement, marking a milestone in Goa’s government healthcare system.

The surgery was led by Dr Vikas Solyekar, head of orthopaedics, with assistance from Dr Prabhav Desai and Dr Divya Pai.

"Driven by sustained research, continuous learning, and focused efforts by the orthopaedic team to introduce technology-enabled surgical equipment within govt healthcare, ensuring that innovation is not limited to private institutions," Dr Solyekar said.

He added that adopting AI-supported systems for joint replacement could strengthen the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality surgical care to patients from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

According to Solyekar, the technology offers real-time guidance during surgery, helping clinicians achieve accurate knee alignment and precise implant positioning.

"Improved precision can contribute to better functional outcomes and may support earlier mobilisation. With timely physiotherapy and rehabilitation, patients can progress towards recovery with greater confidence under clinical supervision," he said.

The development marks a step towards introducing evidence-based medical technologies into Goa’s government hospitals.

By incorporating AI-assisted surgery into public healthcare, North Goa District Hospital has demonstrated an effort to extend access to advanced surgical care while strengthening the role of technology in government-run medical services.

Unlike conventional knee replacement procedures, AI-assisted systems can provide surgeons with real-time intraoperative guidance to support bone alignment and implant positioning, helping surgical teams make more precise adjustments during the procedure.

The procedure was also reported as Goa’s first AI-assisted total knee replacement performed at a government hospital, positioning the achievement as a milestone in the state’s public healthcare system.

The use of AI-assisted surgery at the government facility reflects efforts to integrate technology-driven medical procedures into public healthcare, making advanced treatment options more accessible beyond private hospitals.
