Fortis Healthcare Plans to Introduce India’s First Upright Proton Therapy System to Enhance Precision Cancer Care

The system will integrate Mevion Medical Systems' compact proton therapy technology with Leo Cancer Care's Marie upright patient positioning and CT imaging platform, along with RayStation treatment planning software from RaySearch Laboratories.

Fortis Healthcare, a subsidiary of the Malaysia-based IHH Healthcare group, has announced plans to install the MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurugram.

The system will integrate Mevion Medical Systems' compact proton therapy technology with Leo Cancer Care's Marie upright patient positioning and CT imaging platform, along with RayStation treatment planning software from RaySearch Laboratories.

According to reports, the planned installation would make FMRI the first healthcare facility in India to introduce an upright proton therapy system and the first site in the country to install a Leo Cancer Care system.

The latest initiative seeks to advance India’s precision-oncology capabilities and expand access to highly targeted radiation treatment for selected adult and paediatric cancers.

The new system combines an ultra-compact proton accelerator and fixed-beam delivery architecture with a 360-degree upright patient-positioning platform and integrated CT imaging.

Additionally, the platform integrates CT imaging at the treatment position, enabling imaging, patient positioning, and treatment to be carried out in the same orientation.

This approach is intended to support patient alignment and image-guided treatment workflows by reducing changes in anatomical positioning between imaging and treatment.

Further, its workflow is supported by RayStation treatment-planning software, including RaySearch, integrating proton therapy planning and treatment workflows within a single platform.

Unlike conventional proton therapy systems that use a rotating gantry, the technology positions patients upright before a fixed proton beam.

The proposed installation is aimed at enabling a more compact treatment setup while providing an alternative positioning option for patients who may have difficulty lying flat.
