Official statistics indicate that women make up approximately 52% of the helpline's users, with a substantial volume of calls focused on depression (19.87%) and stress stemming from employment or academics (19.20%). Additionally, sleep disturbances (15.57%) and anxiety-related conditions (11.7%) represent major concerns for callers, while issues regarding substance abuse also constitute a significant share of the total interactions.
Health Minister Y. Satyakumar, after recently reviewing the functioning of the centres, instructed officials to handle every call with the highest level of seriousness and provide prompt assistance to all callers.
Officials stated that counsellors, operating under the supervision of psychiatrists, offer guidance through phone calls and, when necessary, via video consultations. Each session generally lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, with some individuals returning for multiple sessions to receive ongoing support.
Officials highlighted that strict confidentiality is maintained, as counsellors cannot see callers’ phone numbers. Calls are automatically directed to available centres within the state, ensuring timely assistance in the caller’s native language.
At the national level, Tele-MANAS functions through 53 centres, with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences acting as the apex body for the southern states.
Authorities highlighted that the initiative is playing a crucial role in addressing mental health challenges, with India estimated to have nearly 197 million people affected by such conditions. On the occasion, officials also urged citizens to utilise the helpline and seek professional support when needed.
