UP & Japan Deepen Healthcare Partnership Across Pharma & Medtech

The state also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 12 pharmaceutical companies

Uttar Pradesh and Japan have strengthened their healthcare partnership with a focus on pharmaceuticals and medtech.

The collaboration was discussed during the recent visit of Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, who also met with CM Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh, focusing on the UP-Japan Healthcare and Care Economy Partnership.

The discussions focused on collaboration across technology adoption, medical education, pharmaceutical development, advanced surgical robotics, medical technology, and skilled healthcare workforce development.

The session brought together government officials, industry representatives, and the Japanese delegation, including Juichi Kobayashi, Director General of the Industrial Policy Department of Yamanashi Prefecture, to discuss opportunities for deeper cooperation in healthcare, medical technology, pharmaceuticals, and workforce development

Sharing thoughts on the partnership, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Amit Ghosh, said, “The state is advancing robotics-assisted healthcare and specialised medical device manufacturing in collaboration with Japanese partners.”

Elaborating on the state’s medtech initiative, he stated that a 400-acre Medical Tech Park is planned in Uttar Pradesh to support medical innovation and technology development.

Highlighting the investment potential, he added that Japanese companies are showing keen interest in investing in Uttar Pradesh, while efforts are also underway to bring Japanese technology to the state, noting that new possibilities for collaboration in robotics are also being explored.

Beyond medtech, the state also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 12 pharmaceutical companies and is engaging Japanese institutional investors for the development of new medical colleges under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The combination of Japan’s work culture and technological expertise with Uttar Pradesh’s expanding healthcare infrastructure is expected to create a strong and sustainable development model, Ghosh stated.

Highlighting the expansion of Uttar Pradesh’s public healthcare infrastructure, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak noted that the number of operational medical colleges in the state has increased from 47 to more than 83.

The state has also expanded seats across MBBS, MD, nursing, and paramedical programmes.

Further, to address Japan’s growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals, Uttar Pradesh plans to facilitate the deployment of certified doctors, pharmacists, nurses and medical technicians.

The initiative will include specialised language training and orientation on Japanese workplace practices.

The latest initiative is built on Uttar Pradesh's ongoing efforts to expand its healthcare and medtech capabilities through international partnerships.

The development comes after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent Japan visit, during which he met CEOs and senior representatives of Japanese companies and invited them to explore investment opportunities in Uttar Pradesh, including in medical device manufacturing.

A key focus of his discussions was the Medical Device Park being developed in the YEIDA region, which he described as a golden opportunity for Japanese companies.
