The Centre and the West Bengal government have come together to expand the reach of key science, research, innovation, and startup schemes across the state, marking a significant step toward strengthening the region’s scientific ecosystem.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting between Union Minister Jitendra Singh and state leadership, along with senior officials from scientific and research institutions. The collaboration aims to ensure that central government initiatives are more effectively implemented at the grassroots level, particularly in educational and research institutions.
Under this initiative, several flagship programmes such as INSPIRE, INSPIRE MANAK, Vigyan Jyoti, KIRAN, and WISE will be rolled out more widely across schools, colleges, and universities in West Bengal.
These schemes are designed to promote scientific thinking among students, encourage innovation, and increase participation in science and technology fields, especially among young learners and women. By expanding these programmes, both governments aim to create a more inclusive and robust pipeline for future scientists, researchers, and entrepreneurs.
The implementation strategy will involve close coordination between central and state agencies to integrate these schemes into existing academic and institutional frameworks. Scientific bodies, research organisations, and educational institutions will play a key role in ensuring that the benefits reach students and researchers across the state.
In addition to expanding educational and innovation schemes, the collaboration also includes plans to address key public health and research challenges.
A study led by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will be undertaken to examine arsenic contamination in affected districts of West Bengal.
Furthermore, efforts will be made to strengthen collaborative research in critical areas such as cancer treatment and antimicrobial therapies by linking top scientific and medical institutions.
