Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital Unveils India’s First 240-Slide Digital Pathology System

The platform allows pathologists to examine slides at nearly 80X magnification, helping clinicians study cellular structures with greater detail and consistency.

Hyderabad-based Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute has unveiled India’s first 240-slide Digital Pathology System, bringing advanced digital imaging and pathology workflows into routine cancer diagnostics.

Installed with support from the ICICI Foundation, the Roche Ventana DP 600 platform has been designed to help specialists digitally scan, store, review, and share pathology slides with greater speed and clarity.

According to hospital officials, the Roche Ventana DP 600 system features a high-capacity 240-slide scanner that converts blood and tissue samples into high-resolution digital images.

The platform allows pathologists to examine slides at nearly 80X magnification, helping clinicians study cellular structures with greater detail and consistency.

Dr Sushila Kodandapani, head of the department of laboratory medicine and pathology, said, “This technology will help pathologists review cases digitally with exceptional clarity, improving diagnostic efficiency and patient outcomes.”

Digital pathology systems are increasingly being used in cancer hospitals to support telepathology, multidisciplinary tumour board discussions, academic collaboration, and AI-assisted diagnostics.

Experts believe these platforms can also help address the growing demand for pathology services by improving reporting efficiency and enabling remote access to case reviews.

The system was inaugurated by actor and hospital chairman Nandamuri Balakrishna in the presence of trust board members Dr Nori Dattatreyudu and J.S.R. Prasad, along with medical director Dr T.S. Rao, medical superintendent Dr Phani Koteswara Rao, associate director (academics) Dr Kalpana Raghunath, and senior cancer specialists from the institute.
