Azim Premji Foundation Announces INR 1000 Cr Super-Speciality Hospital in Bangalore
The proposed hospital is expected to become fully operational within the next five years and will be driven entirely by philanthropic funding.
Azim Premji Foundation has announced plans to set up a 1,000-bed super speciality hospital in Bengaluru, aimed at providing advanced and affordable healthcare, with a particular focus on organ transplantation and tertiary-level hospital services for underserved populations.
The proposed hospital is expected to become fully operational within the next five years and will be driven entirely by philanthropic funding.
A significant proportion of the hospital’s ward beds will be offered free of cost, while the remaining beds will be priced at levels comparable to government tertiary hospitals. The hospital will also be empanelled under public health insurance schemes such as Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka, ensuring that eligible patients can access care without facing high out-of-pocket expenses.
“Although private hospitals contribute to overall capacity, access to advanced care remains limited for socio-economically disadvantaged populations due to high costs. A new large tertiary care hospital will help ease the burden on existing public facilities and expand access to quality, affordable care, while also preparing the city's health system for future growth,” said Anand Swaminathan, Head (Health), Azim Premji Foundation.
The Karnataka government has agreed to lease around 10 acres of land near Kyalasanahalli in north Bengaluru, close to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans), to the foundation for a period of 99 years.
The project is estimated to require an investment of about INR 1,000 Cr, with the foundation committing an additional Rs 350 crore annually to support hospital operations once it is functional.
The announcement also comes amid growing collaboration between large philanthropic and public institutions in strengthening India’s hospital ecosystem. Tata Memorial Centre, a comprehensive cancer care hospital functioning under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, has in recent years expanded partnerships with private and philanthropic organisations to improve access to advanced oncology services.
One of its largest collaborations includes a tie-up with Azim Premji-led Wipro for healthcare initiatives aimed at strengthening cancer care delivery and capacity building, underscoring a shared emphasis on socially driven hospital infrastructure.
Separately, the Azim Premji Foundation is also developing its first hospital project in Jharkhand, marking its initial foray into direct hospital operations. The philanthropy-led hospital, currently under construction, is intended to provide free healthcare services to economically disadvantaged populations and is expected to be completed by January 2027.
Together, these initiatives reflect a broader strategy by the foundation to invest in large-scale, not-for-profit hospital models that complement public health systems while expanding access to quality care.
