Ayushman Cards Surpass 43.5 Cr as Digital Health Ecosystem Scales Under AB-PMJAY & ABDM
Over 86 crore ABHA accounts have been created, with more than 90 crore health records linked to them.
India’s Ayushman Bharat health initiatives have recorded significant expansion, with more than 43.52 crore Ayushman Cards issued and steady progress in building a nationwide digital health ecosystem through the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
Launched as one of the world’s largest publicly funded health assurance schemes, Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) was designed to provide financial protection to economically vulnerable populations.
The scheme offers health coverage of INR 5 lakh per family annually for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation, targeting nearly 12 crore families, or the bottom 40% of India’s population.
In recent expansions, coverage has been extended to frontline workers such as ASHAs and Anganwadi staff, as well as senior citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of socio-economic status.
As of February 2026, the scheme has facilitated over 11.69 crore hospital admissions, translating into authorised treatments worth approximately INR 1.73 lakh Cr. The healthcare delivery network supporting this scale includes 36,229 empanelled hospitals across the country, with a balanced mix of 19,483 public and 16,746 private institutions.
The updated Health Benefit Package now enables cashless access to 1,961 procedures spanning 27 medical specialities, broadening the scope of care available to beneficiaries.
Parallel to this, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has accelerated the creation of a unified digital health ecosystem. Since its launch in September 2021, the mission has focused on building interoperable digital infrastructure to connect patients, providers, and health systems.
As of March 2026, more than 86 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) have been created, with over 90 crore health records digitally linked to these accounts.
The adoption of ABDM-enabled systems has also gained momentum at the provider level, with more than 2.5 lakh healthcare facilities now integrated into the digital framework. This growing network is enabling seamless data exchange, improved continuity of care, and enhanced efficiency across healthcare delivery.
