The government of Assam has announced plans to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure and expand advanced medical services across the state through a series of initiatives focused on medical education, digital health governance, and technology adoption.

The initiatives were discussed in a recent meeting chaired by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The CM reviewed plans related to healthcare expansion, AI-led governance initiatives, and infrastructure development, and announced major policy directions aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare system.

In a social media post on X, the Chief Minister said the government is working towards building a stronger and more efficient healthcare system under the vision of “Swasth Assam”, with special focus on improving hospitals, expanding medical education, and upgrading facilities across the state.

As part of the expansion plan, Sarma also reviewed the construction progress of 10 medical colleges currently being developed in Assam and stressed that the state officials should scale up the developmental work.

The government also explored opportunities to include robotic surgeries and an AI-enabled healthcare system in healthcare facilities in phases to boost healthcare access and strengthen advanced treatment.

Highlighting the need for advanced technologies in healthcare facilities, the CM stated, “I have directed that our health institutions must create facilities for robotic surgeries, liver transplant, and application of AI in medical processes in a phased manner.”

The CM also directed that every district in Assam should work on setting up nursing colleges to strengthen healthcare manpower in the coming years.

Further, the discussion also focused on a review of insurance schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, Cancer centre, etc.

“We reviewed the progress of proton beam therapy, GMCH expansion and functioning of Ayushman Bharat, Ayushman Assam and our Cancer Centres,” Sarma said.

Furthermore, the CM also prioritised patient care facilities in government hospitals, the availability of medicines, and filling up vacancies in the health sector.

The latest development comes amid the recent announcement of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to allocate INR 50,000 crore aimed at strengthening health infrastructure across the state during the first meeting of the NDA 3.0 Assam Cabinet.
