AIIMS Madurai to Begin 150-Bed Operations in January 2027

Phase I construction had reached 88% completion, while Phase II works stood at 35%, alongside academic activities.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai has been scheduled to begin operations with 150 beds in January 2027, according to AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP IS Inbadurai, following a meeting with institute director Dr Vir Singh Negi to review construction progress at the Thoppur campus.

The proposed start of hospital services marks a key step in the development of AIIMS Madurai, which has faced construction delays since its foundation stone was laid in January 2019.

Inbadurai, who was nominated to the institute's governing body by the Union health ministry in September, said Negi had briefed him on the progress of construction.

In a post on X, the MP said, "I am happy to learn that Madurai AIIMS will begin functioning with 150 beds in the first phase from January," adding that construction had reached its final stages.

The announcement follows a September 17 submission by the Centre before the Madras High Court, stating that full-fledged outpatient department (OPD) services at AIIMS Madurai would commence on January 1, 2027.

However, the court submission did not specify a start date for inpatient services, leaving the timeline for the proposed 150-bed operations to be clarified.

According to the Centre's status report, overall project completion was expected to reach 59% by the end of September. Phase I construction had reached 88% completion, while Phase II works stood at 35%, indicating that significant work remained across the project's different stages.

Academic activities have also progressed alongside construction. Five batches of MBBS students, who had previously been accommodated at Ramanathapuram Government Medical College, were moved to the Thoppur campus by August 31.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for AIIMS Madurai in January 2019, but construction did not begin until May 2024. The project is largely financed through a Japanese development loan.
