AstraZeneca, Oracle Partner to Use AI to Optimise Clinical Trials

The first programme will focus on hypertension care and clinical research in Abu Dhabi, in partnership with UAE-based healthcare company M42.

AstraZeneca and Oracle have entered a collaboration to explore how AI and real-world data can improve clinical trials, identify eligible patients earlier, and connect research findings with routine healthcare.

The initiative will also examine opportunities for earlier disease diagnosis, drug-safety monitoring and evidence generation across multiple therapeutic areas.

The partnership brings together AstraZeneca’s drug development and clinical research expertise with Oracle’s data, cloud infrastructure, AI and healthcare technology capabilities.

The companies aim to address persistent challenges in clinical research, including patient recruitment delays and gaps between scientific advances and their application in clinical practice.

The initial areas of exploration include oncology, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases, respiratory conditions, immunology and rare diseases.

The collaboration will also assess how insights from clinical research and routine care can inform future study design, safety monitoring and treatment decisions.

The first programme will focus on hypertension care and clinical research in Abu Dhabi, in partnership with UAE-based healthcare company M42. It will help clinical teams identify patients with uncontrolled hypertension, support guideline-directed care, and improve recruitment for clinical trials.

The collaboration is expected to extend across multiple international projects, with potential programmes in the United States, the Middle East and Europe.

Any expansion will depend on applicable regulatory requirements, local partnerships and the outcomes of individual projects.

Pascal Soriot, Chief Executive Officer of AstraZeneca, said, “This unique collaboration brings leaders in healthcare and AI together at a global scale to accelerate the journey from the discovery of medicine to patient care. Combining AstraZeneca's world-class science with Oracle’s deep data and technology expertise, we can help clinicians identify patients sooner, optimise clinical trials, and generate evidence continuously across the lifecycle of a medicine.”

The companies have agreed to explore a continuous learning model that connects evidence from research and everyday care.

They also intend to establish shared governance arrangements, reusable technical components and outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed solutions.

The partnership will use de-identified real-world data under privacy, security and governance safeguards.

AstraZeneca will not receive patient-identifiable information, and each proposed project will require appropriate legal, ethical, regulatory and institutional approvals before proceeding.

The agreement is non-binding, and the companies have not disclosed financial terms.

The collaboration’s impact will depend on how effectively the proposed AI-enabled approaches improve patient identification, clinical trial efficiency, and the translation of research findings into care.
