Andhra Plans 500-Acre Medical Devices Manufacturing Zone 2.0 in Vizag

The 500-acre manufacturing zone will build on the existing Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone’s success and is expected to support R&D, exports and employment while lowering India’s dependence on imported medical devices.

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced plans to develop a 500-acre Medical Devices Manufacturing Zone 2.0 in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), aimed at expanding the state’s medtech production capacity and attracting investment from global and domestic medical device manufacturers.

The initiative builds on the success of the existing Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone and reflects the state’s focus on strengthening India’s healthcare manufacturing ecosystem.

The proposed zone is expected to host production facilities for electronic and high-value medical equipment, including advanced diagnostics, imaging technologies, consumables and other critical devices needed across hospitals and clinical settings.

Nara Lokesh, Minister for Information Technology and Industries, Government of Andhra Pradesh, emphasized the strategic importance of the project for local industry and national supply chains.

“By offering dedicated infrastructure and a strong manufacturing ecosystem, the Medical Devices Manufacturing Zone 2.0 will enhance India’s self-reliance in high-end healthcare technologies and attract global manufacturers to invest in Vizag,” he said.

The zone is expected to complement the existing Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) in Nadupuru, which has already positioned Vizag as a key hub for medical technology innovation and production.

AMTZ, led by Dr. Jitendra Sharma, Managing Director and CEO, has played a pivotal role in accelerating local manufacturing and has drawn attention from industry players seeking to scale operations in India’s growing medtech sector.

Industry stakeholders noted that the expanded zone could support research and development activities, boost exports, and create employment opportunities across the value chain - from skilled manufacturing roles to testing and validation services.

Increased domestic production capacity is also expected to reduce reliance on imports, in line with the government’s Make in India initiative.

The Andhra Pradesh government is working to finalize planning approvals, land use allocation and policy incentives to ensure that the new zone attracts both multinational firms and Indian startups.

Once operational, the Medical Devices Manufacturing Zone 2.0 is poised to strengthen India’s position in global medtech manufacturing and improve access to advanced healthcare technologies nationwide.
