AIIMS Bhubaneswar to Deploy AI for Early Detection of Thyroid Disorders

The AI deployment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar aims to enhance detection rates and ensure timely intervention, particularly in areas with limited access to specialized healthcare.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar will introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems to enhance the early diagnosis and management of thyroid disorders, according to the institute’s executive director, Ashutosh Biswas.
Highlighting the prevalence of hypothyroidism in India, Biswas said the condition affects about 1 in 10 adults, with women being three times more likely to suffer from it than men. He added that a significant number of patients remain undiagnosed.
"AI diagnosis, which is set to be introduced in AIIMS Bhubaneswar, will help in early diagnosis, track disease progression, and support outcome-based medication, especially benefiting patients in rural and underserved areas," said Biswas.
He warned of the wide-ranging consequences of untreated hypothyroidism. “Untreated hypothyroidism can adversely impact major organs including the heart, brain, kidneys, liver, intestines, and the reproductive system,” he said.
He added that the condition may lead to stunted growth, obesity, developmental delays, and poor academic performance in children and infants.
The AI integration aims to improve access to timely treatment, especially in regions with limited diagnostic facilities.
