The institute cited the need to expand OPD services, build centres of excellence, and provide housing for staff and students.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar has sought 100 acres of additional land from the Odisha government to expand its clinical, academic, and residential infrastructure.
The demand was formally placed during a recent meeting between AIIMS Bhubaneswar president Shailesh Kumar, executive director Ashutosh Biswas, and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
The institute leadership highlighted the pressing need for expansion to strengthen its outpatient and inpatient services, establish new centres of excellence, and provide adequate housing for its staff and students.
“If we get more land, we can expand the services of the outpatient department (OPD) and clinical care services. We will set up centres of excellence on the campus. Land is also needed to create residential facilities for staff. We may set up research centres for research purposes in the coming days,” said Biswas.
The officials also urged the state government to bring the institution under the jurisdiction of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to improve access to urban civic services.
“After the institute comes under the BMC area, street light problems will be solved. The civic body will address cleanliness issues. The garbage lifting process will become smooth. Proper surveillance in the area will keep the locality safe,” Biswas added.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar currently functions on a 92-acre campus, though it was initially planned as a 200-acre facility. Of the present area, 60 acres are designated for hospital infrastructure, while the remaining space is used for residential facilities for students and staff. The proposed expansion aims to meet the increasing demand for medical services, support infrastructure for healthcare professionals, and new academic and research initiatives.
Following the meeting with the Chief Minister, Biswas also discussed administrative support for the expansion plan and institutional coordination with state agencies with Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja and Health Secretary Aswathy S.
Chief Minister Majhi acknowledged AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s contribution to the state’s healthcare ecosystem. An official statement from AIIMS noted, “He acknowledged the institute's role in transforming healthcare delivery and contributing significantly to both healthcare and medical education in Odisha.”
Established in 2012, AIIMS Bhubaneswar is among the six second-generation AIIMS institutions developed under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, along with institutes in Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh, Jodhpur, and Bhopal.
