The system combines high-resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging (1.5T MRI) with a linear accelerator (LINAC) for adaptive radiotherapy.
Yashoda Medicity has announced the installation of the Elekta Unity MR Linac system, marking the first deployment in India of a radiation therapy platform integrated with Comprehensive Motion Management (CMM).
The system combines high-resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging (1.5T MRI) with a linear accelerator (LINAC) for adaptive radiotherapy.
Dr. Upasana Arora, MD, Yashoda Medicity, said, “Introducing India’s first MR Linac with Comprehensive Motion Management marks a transformative step in cancer care. This technology allows us to personalize real-time treatment, offering a significant step forward in providing high-quality cancer care.”
Unlike conventional Cone Beam CT-based systems, the MRI-guided technology offers improved soft-tissue contrast, allowing clinicians to visualize tumors and surrounding anatomy more precisely. This facilitates adaptation to daily plans and minimizes exposure to healthy tissues.
According to the hospital, the system supports hypofractionated treatments—delivering higher radiation doses in fewer sessions, which can enhance patient convenience and optimize clinical capacity. It also enables sub-millimetric targeting of small tumors, lymph nodes, and oligometastatic lesions.
The platform includes remote access features, allowing clinicians to review and approve plans from various locations, and sets the stage for integration with Biology-Guided Radiotherapy (BgRT), an emerging technique based on biological markers.
Dr. Gagan Saini, Vice Chairman and Head of Radiation & Oncology, added, “According to the World Health Organization, over 1.4 million new cancer cases are reported annually in India. For various clinical reasons, most patients need radiation therapy for some reason or another. MR Linac at Yashoda Medicity ushers a new era with first of its kind Elekta Unity with CMM to keep the patients with least complications of Radiotherapy especially for cases that receive repeat course of radiation therapy.”
The Elekta Unity MR Linac has received multiple international recognitions, including the Red Dot Design Award and the Institute of Physics Business Innovation Award. The system is currently being installed at Yashoda Medicity and is expected to become operational shortly.
